Overview
Pediatric Behavioral Health and Wellness services within the Pediatric Gastroenterology (GI) clinic support children and families coping with gastrointestinal conditions and related stress. A Pediatric psychologist works directly with the GI care team to address emotional, behavioral, and coping challenges that can affect a child’s health and treatment.
Our Approach
Pediatric Psychologists are members of the GI team within the Pediatric Gastroenterology (GI) clinic and are trained to provide a multidisciplinary approach to GI health and wellness for children, teens, young adults, and their families.
Our pediatric psychologist can help with:
- Understanding the connection between the brain and gut and learning to adopt strategies to reduce or manage gastrointestinal symptoms.
- Adjusting to medical conditions and associated stress
- Managing chronic health conditions and pain levels
- Following treatment recommendations and coping with medical procedures
- Addressing parenting, school, and daily functioning challenges
What Sets Us Apart?
Our Pediatric Psychologist works with a Gastroenterologist and Nurse Practitioners who specialize in treating children, teens, and young adults (up to age 21) with gastrointestinal (GI) conditions and Disorders of the Gut-Brain Interaction (DGBIs). Our team is here to help you and your family cope with your medical condition, manage GI symptoms, and improve your quality of life.
Having a chronic or serious illness comes with unique challenges that can cause anyone to feel stressed. Access to mental health support right in the medical clinic can help reduce some of this stress and better support our families. It can also:
- Reduce stigma and barriers to accessing mental health care
- Improve collaboration of care
- Increase medical effectiveness through whole-person care (biopsychosocial model)
