Transthoracic Echocardiography

A transthoracic echocardiogram (or "echo" for short) is an ultrasound test that uses sound waves to produce images of the heart. It is a safe and painless procedure that allows your doctor to obtain information about your heart. Using echocardiography information can be obtained about:

  • The structure of the heart, valves, and large vessels
  • Size and function of the chambers
  • Function of the valves within the heart
