Free Skin Cancer Checks May 30 at University of Rochester Medical Center

Dermatologists recommend using sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more to prevent skin damage when out in the sun.

A free skin cancer detection clinic will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 30 at the University of Rochester Medical Center. Local dermatologists will conduct skin screenings to detect skin cancers and pre-cancerous conditions in the Dermatology area on the second floor of the Ambulatory Care Facility.

The 23^rd annual clinic is sponsored by the American Academy of Dermatology, Rochester Dermatologic Society, and the Department of Dermatology at the University of Rochester Medical Center. Each screening takes about five minutes to conduct and a written report of findings will be given to each participant. Information on skin cancer and skin cancer prevention will also be available.

Last year, more than 75,000 people were screened nationally, including 221 in Rochester. Locally, dermatologists diagnosed 13 cases of basal cell carcinoma and six cases of squamous cell carcinoma. One case of melanoma, the most virulent form of skin cancer, was detected as well. A list of dermatologists in the community is provided to those diagnosed with skin cancer.

Most skin cancer is curable if found in its early stages. Early diagnosis and education are the prime reasons for the skin cancer detection clinic. Excessive exposure to the sun is the leading cause of skin cancer, and those with lighter complexions are at a higher risk.
