Ninth Men’s Health Day is set for June 13

May. 28, 2013
The popular men’s health event returns in a streamlined, even more affordable format.

The University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) is inviting men to embark upon a “Journey to Healthy Living” at its 9th Men’s Health Day, an informal afternoon of URMC experts discussing health topics that men care about most. Men’s Health Day will run from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, June 13, at Mario’s Italian Steakhouse, 2740 Monroe Avenue, Rochester. The event includes lunch and is free and open to men ages 45 and older.

URMC urologist and event organizer Jean V. Joseph, M.D., M.B.A., said, “The Centers for Disease Control report that male life expectancy is inching upward, but women still outpace men by about five years. Among the reasons for this are lack of education, outmoded belief systems, risk-taking behavior and general denial. As the enormous cohort of Baby Boomers ages and health care costs rise, it is more important than ever to provide men with the tools they need to stay active, healthy and maintain good quality of life.”

At the top of the program, URMC Chief Executive Officer Bradford C. Berk, M.D., Ph.D., will extend a welcome and issue a challenge to the men in the audience to take charge of their health. During lunch, Strong Memorial and Highland hospitals’ President and Chief Executive Officer Steven I. Goldstein will give the keynote address on health care reform and how it will impact our community.

Other sessions and speakers include*:

  • “The State of Men’s Health in Western New York” – Nancy M. Bennett, M.D., professor of Medicine and Community and Preventive Medicine and director of the Center for Community Health.
  • “Health Care Reform and How It Will Impact our Community” – Steven I. Goldstein, president and chief executive officer of Strong Memorial and Highland hospitals and senior vice president of the University of Rochester Medical Center.
  • “Memory and Nutrition: Fact or Myth” – Roger M. Oskvig, M.D., geriatrician and medical advisor to the award-winning PBS health series, Second Opinion.
  • “Signs of Low Testosterone and What You Can Do About It” – Ahmed Ghazi, M.D., assistant professor, department of Urology.
  • “Heart Health” – John D. Bisognano, M.D., Ph.D., professor of Medicine, division of Cardiology and director of Outpatient Cardiology, department of Medicine.
  • “Back Pain in the Aging Athlete: Staying in the Game” – Robert W. Molinari, M.D., professor, department of Orthopedics; Clifford R. Everett, M.D., M.P.H.,  associate professor, departments of Orthopedics and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation; and Robert E. Replogle, M.D., assistant professor, departments of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Imaging.
