Six URMC Programs Cited as Among Best in Nation
When US News & World Report’s 2014 Best Hospitals guidebook hits newsstands today, a record number of six University of Rochester Medical Center specialties will be ranked among the very best in the nation. That’s the highest number of URMC programs ever to earn a seat in the magazine’s list of the nation’s top 50 in a single year, since US News began ranking hospitals in 1989. The rankings consider data on nearly 5,000 eligible hospitals, only 147 of which made it to this year’s national list. Fewer than 50 hospitals had six or more programs on the lists.
The URMC adult specialties nationally ranked include Endocrinology, which earned the highest URMC ranking at 21st best; Neurology and Neurosurgery as the 29th best; Gynecology and Nephrology, each of which scored as the 32nd best; Urology which ranked as 39th best; and Gastroenterology and GI Surgery at 48th best. Earlier this year, US News ranked URMC’s pediatric orthopaedics program as 45th best in its Best Children’s Hospitals listing.
In the remaining specialties ranked by the magazine, URMC’s programs for cancer, heart disease, geriatrics, orthopaedics, pulmonology, and otolaryngology (ear, nose, and throat conditions) all scored in the top 25 percent of eligible hospitals.
“URMC’s success in the US News rankings reflects the hard work that our faculty and staff have invested to continuously improve quality, patient safety and satisfaction. It also reflects URMC’s growing reputation for first-rate care,” said URMC CEO Bradford C. Berk, M.D., Ph.D.
Also,URMC affiliate Highland Hospital was listed as one of the best hospitals in Western New York. The regional rankings recognized Highland for its services in six specialties: Ear, Nose and Throat; Gastroenterology and GI Surgery; Geriatrics; Gynecology; Orthopaedics; and Pulmonology.
Each year, U.S. News uses a combination of statistical and reputational measures including survival rates, patient safety scores, volume and reputation, to select the top 50 hospitals in each of 16 medical specialties.
