Teen Athletes Invited to UR Medicine Co-Ed Sports Performance Enhancement Camp

Jun. 5, 2014
New Eastside YMCA location allows for expanded offerings

High school and college athletes have the opportunity to learn strength and conditioning skills at a five-week Sports Performance Enhancement Camp sponsored by UR Medicine Sports Medicine, a division of the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation.

The camp will take place from June 30 to July 31 at a new location: Eastside YMCA, 1835 Fairport Nine Mile Point Road, Penfield. It will run 9 to 11:15 a.m. Monday through Thursday.
“The camp is designed to be a fun way to learn effective training methods such as plyometrics, agility ladders, weight training, speed training and other conditioning drills,” said Todd Peterson, A.T.C., P.T.A., CSCS. “Our new partnership with the YMCA gives us access to equipment and space that we have not had in the past – a rock climbing wall, 2.5 mile mini-mudder course, weight room, spinning studio and an Olympic-size swimming pool.”

Athletes are grouped in teams with peers of similar ages and gender. Each team is assigned a coach. The goal of the camp is to help teens get into shape for the upcoming fall sports season. This type of training helps reduce risk of injury and improve their competitive edge. The drills are constructed to help participants improve their running form, agility and foot speed; increase flexibility, balance, coordination and joint awareness; enhance core strength and muscle control.

The UR Medicine Sports Medicine’s team of strength and conditioning specialists, exercise physiologists, athletic trainers and nutritionists designed the content of the program to help increase athletes’ power, speed and flexibility and reduce injuries. The Rochester Red Wings and Lancers will send players and coaches each week to help discuss what it takes to be a pro athlete and they also will participate in drills.
