We’re thrilled that you’re considering a visiting elective with us! At Golisano Children’s Hospital (GCH), visiting students learn alongside attendings, residents, and fellows; care for diverse patients; and gain valuable clinical experience. Whether you’re exploring Pediatrics broadly or trying out a subspecialty, we’d love to host you in Rochester.

GCH is the pediatric heart of UR Medicine—anchored by a high-volume children’s hospital and a network of community sites. As the region’s referral center, we offer broad clinical exposure across outpatient, inpatient, ICU, and subspecialty settings, with nationally recognized teaching, large catchment area, and a family-centered care culture.

Why Rochester?

Rochester is a friendly, mid-sized city on the Genesee River and a gateway to the Finger Lakes. You’ll find diverse neighborhoods (Park Ave, South Wedge, College Town), great food, parks and waterfalls, and easy day trips for hiking, biking, skiing, and lake views. It’s an easy place to live for a few weeks—and a hard place to leave.

What to Expect on Your Elective

  • Clear, timely communication: Expect updates about your placement, onboarding steps, and rotation requirements in a professional and efficient manner.
  • Pre-rotation check-in: Option to meet with your rotation director by Zoom prior to your start date to discuss your goals, schedule, and ask questions.
  • Residency Program Networking:
    • Opportunities to meet residency program leadership. Resident Buddy program. Join conferences, morning reports, and educational sessions.
    • As our residents are one of our greatest strengths, you’ll have frequent opportunities to work alongside near-peer teachers and experience our welcoming program culture.

How to Apply

All applications are processed through the UR School of Medicine & Dentistry’s visiting student process.

Applications are reviewed by Department of Pediatrics leaders. We aim to host students whose background, experiences, and goals would support the mission of URMC and the Department of Pediatrics.

Rotation Availability & Timing

Elective offerings and start dates vary by block and service needs. We encourage you to apply early for the best selection.

International Visiting Medical Students

The Visiting International Student program is coordinated by the Office of Medical Student Enrichment Programs (OMSEP) and is open to final-year students from partner universities.
