Tara M. Augenstein, PhD is Director of Therapeutic Services and Lead Psychologist for Adult and Geriatric Inpatient Psychiatry at the University of Rochester Medical Center. A licensed clinical psychologist and healthcare leader, she specializes in designing and advancing psychologically informed systems of inpatient psychiatric care. Her work integrates clinical excellence, workforce development, quality improvement, and interdisciplinary collaboration to improve outcomes for patients and healthcare teams. An award-winning educator and mentor, Dr. Augenstein has developed innovative training and care models across academic medicine and acute psychiatry. Her leadership focuses on creating recovery-oriented environments where patients, staff, and learners can thrive.

My research sits at the intersection of clinical innovation, psychiatric assessment, and psychological mechanisms of vulnerability, with an emphasis on high-risk, underserved, or difficult-to-assess populations. Through my research, I seek to explore how we can more accurately understand and reduce risk in vulnerable populations, particularly when our tools for doing so are imperfect or biased.
