As a clinician scientist, Dr. Hayes completed her graduate training at the University at Buffalo, earning both her Doctorate in Audiology as well as her Ph.D. in Neuroscience in the Center for Hearing and Deafness. She then went on to complete her postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at the University of Western Ontario in Canada, where she also held an appointment as Adjunct Research Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. Dr. Hayes’ research aims to understand how brain plasticity caused by hearing loss leads to auditory pathologies such as tinnitus and hyperacusis, and how hearing loss increases the risk for development of cognitive impairment. Ultimately, her research addresses our crucial need to better understand the adverse effects of hearing loss on brain health.
