Biography

Richard Kreipe, MD, FAAP, FSAM, FAED, the founding Director of the Child and Adolescent Eating Disorder Program, is a board-certified pediatrician and adolescent medicine specialist, as well as a Fellow of the Academy for Eating Disorders. His professional focus for the last 30 years has been on pediatric eating disorders, having published numerous research studies, articles, book
chapters, position papers and reviews on the topic. Dr. Kreipe is a consultant to the American Psychiatric Association regarding diagnostic criteria for eating disorders in young people, and is a past-President of the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine. He is the founding Medical Director of the Western New York Comprehensive Care Center for Eating Disorders, which forms a coordinated, integrated network of care across the full range of services
and settings required for the treatment of eating disorders. In addition, Dr. Kreipe devotes much time to in-person and web-based continuing education of professionals to encourage earlier recognition and treatment of eating disorders, as well as community-based prevention efforts.

Research

Dr. Kreipe's research centers on eating disorders - ultimately on their prevention and treatment. Anorexia nervosa and bulimia affect up to 5% of some female populations, resulting in numerous medical complications, including growth failure, pubertal delay, amenorrhea, and osteoporosis. Research based in the Adolescent Eating Disorders Program at Strong Children's Hospital is elucidating the physical effects of eating disorders on growth and development. Long-term follow-up is being conducted to determine the outcome of treatment for patients hospitalized on the Adolescent Medical Unit. Through chart review and patient interview a minimum of 4 years after hospitalization, it is possible to monitor the progress that patients make after discharge from treatment. Effects of eating disorders on cardiac pacing is being studied through computer analysis of electrocardiograms and positional changes in pulse rate.

Osteoporosis has been described in patients with anorexia nervosa. Studies of bone metabolism and density being conducted at the Clinical Research Center of the University of Rochester will clarify the factors responsible for these changes. Clinical treatment trials are being conducted.
