Biography

Dr. Dewhurst is Vice Dean for Research at the School of Medicine and Dentistry (SMD), and Associate Vice President for Health Sciences Research at the University of Rochester (UR). He is also Chair and Professor of Microbiology & Immunology. He joined UR in 1990 and has over 30 years experience as a molecular virologist, working on both DNA and RNA viruses, including HIV and influenza viruses – as well as (most recently) SARS-CoV-2. He received the UR's highest award for graduate education (the William H. Riker University Award for Graduate Teaching) in 2008, and currently serves as the Principle Investigator (PI) of the UR’s unique Rochester Partnership for Research and Academic Career Training of Deaf Postdoctoral Scholars. This training program, which is administered in collaboration with the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) is the only one of its kind in the nation, and supports the academic career development of Deaf postdoctoral scientists. He was also the founding director of the UR's Postbaccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP), which has supported over 100 trainees from groups under-represented in Medicine since its inception. Finally, he is a named inventor on several patents, the past President of a UR startup company, and a current member of a standing grant review panel for the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Professional Background

ADMINISTRATIVE EXPERIENCE: Dr. Dewhurst is Professor and Chair of Microbiology & Immunology at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry (URSMD). He joined the faculty of UR in 1990 and served as Senior Associate Dean for Basic Research at the URSMD from 2007 to 2009. He was appointed as Chair of Microbiology & Immunology in 2009, and Vice Dean for Research at the URSMD in 2013.

EDUCATION AND MENTORING EXPERIENCE. In the past 10 years, Dr. Dewhurst has mentored: 41 undergraduate students (including 7 persons from racial and ethnic groups underrepresented in biomedical research [URiBR] and 1 deaf individual); 12 doctoral students (including 2 URiBR persons); 2 postdoctoral fellows (including 1 URiBR person) and 6 post-baccalaureate trainees (all URiBR; PREP program). He presently mentors 3 doctoral trainees (including 1 URiBR individual, and co-mentored individual), 1 M.S. student and 2 undergraduates (including 1 URiBR person). Many of his trainees hold positions in industry and government; others are tenure-track investigators at Universities. He has also received several mentoring awards, including the UR’s highest award for graduate education, the William H. Riker University Award for Graduate Teaching (2008), as well as the Graduate Student Society Faculty Teaching Award (1996), and the Graduate Alumni Award for Excellence in Graduate Education (2001). Finally, he is the PI of an NIH-funded predoctoral T32 training program in the Pathogenesis of Bacteria and Viruses, and is the communicating MPI of the UR’s NIH-funded “Broadening Experiences in Scientific Training (BEST)” program, which helps UR postdoctoral fellows and graduate students in biomedical research to explore diverse career options and to participate in aligned courses and learning opportunities.

CONTRIBUTIONS TO EQUITY AND INCLUSION. Dr. Dewhurst is the founding and current director (and contact MPI) of the UR’s NIH-funded Rochester Partnership for Research and Academic Career Training of Deaf Postdoctoral Scholars. This is a unique mentored postdoctoral research training program in biomedical sciences for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (D/HH) Scholars. It is the only program of its kind in the nation. He was also the founding Director for the UR's NIH funded Postbaccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP), which has supported over 100 URiM trainees since its inception. In addition, he is a member of the UR’s Executive Committee on Diversity and Inclusion. Finally, the department of Microbiology and Immunology received the UR Presidential Diversity Award in 2011, under his leadership.

Research

Dr. Dewhurst has over 30 years’ experience in molecular virology research. His research interests include the development of: (1) novel small molecule therapeutics for viral pathogens (including both DNA and RNA viruses, with emphasis most recently on SARS-CoV-2); (2) novel vaccine approaches for influenza virus and for HIV-1. He is a former NIH study section chair and current NIH study section member (HIV Immunopathogenesis and Vaccine Development [HIVD]). He is also the current Executive Director of the UR’s Cell Therapy Manufacturing Facility, and the past President of a UR vaccine startup company.
