Research Bio

Edwin van Wijngaarden, Ph.D. is Chief of the Division of Epidemiology and Director of the Doctoral Program in Epidemiology. Dr. van Wijngaarden received an MSc in Environmental Sciences from Wageningen University in The Netherlands, and a PhD in Epidemiology from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. van Wijngaarden has extensive experience in managing and conducting epidemiologic studies and in academic leadership. He has authored over 80 peer-reviewed manuscripts primarily in the areas of environmental and occupational health. For the past 10 years, his research has focused on the potential effects of exposure to metals and pesticides on nervous system outcomes in children and older adults.

These studies include the Seychelles Child Development Study which investigates the impact of pre- and postnatal methylmercury exposure on child development, and research investigating the association between environmental lead exposure and markers of physiological stress and cognitive function in older adults. He has advised more than 60 graduate students in public health on their Master's theses and doctoral dissertation research projects, and advises undergraduate students majoring in Epidemiology or Environmental Health. He has collaborated on a wide variety of clinical and epidemiological research projects within and outside the Medical Center. Dr. van Wijngaarden is a member of the American College of Epidemiology (ACE) and Society for Epidemiologic Research (SER). He is an Associate Editor for the scientific journal Neurotoxicology, is currently a member of the Publications Committee of ACE, and has served as peer reviewer for more than 30 scientific journals.
