Biography

Professional Background

Dr. Strawderman holds the Donald M. Foster, M.D. Distinguished Professorship in Biostatistics and is Chair of Biostatistics and Computational Biology at the University of Rochester Medical Center.

Dr. Strawderman moved to the University of Rochester to become chair in 2012. He has previously held tenured professorial appointments at Cornell University - Ithaca (2000-2012) and the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor (1992-2000). He received his masters and doctoral degrees in Biostatistics from Harvard University in 1990 and 1992, respectively.

Dr. Strawderman's academic honors include being named as: Fellow of the American Statistical Association (2006), the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Department of Biostatistics at Harvard University (2008), Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (2012), and Dean's Professor at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry (2012-2014).

Research

My major research area is survival analysis. More generally, I am interested in statistical inference for point process data (e.g., recurrent events); statistical learning methods for risk and outcome prediction in medicine, epidemiology and public health; statistical and computational methods for high dimensional data; statistical methods for evaluating the cost and quality of health care; asymptotics (theory and approximation); and various problems in statistical computing.
