School-Based Telemedicine
Our team currently provides in-school Telemedicine services at: Rochester City School District, Mary Cariola Center, Daystar Kids, and Eugenio Maria de Hostos Charter schools. (Additional charter schools coming soon).
Services are available Monday through Friday during school hours.
How School-Based Telemedicine Works
- Call (585) 275-7591 to schedule an appointment with the Pediatric Telemedicine Coordinator or you school nurse can call for you. Have your child’s name, parent/guardian contact information, and reason for the visit available.
- A Telemedicine team member will examine your child at school using specialized equipment while connecting with a pediatric provider.
- The provider will contact the parent or guardian to discuss the diagnosis and treatment plan.
- If medication is needed, a prescription can be sent directly to your pharmacy.
Common Issues Treated
We focus on prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of common issues, such as:
- Ear pain, infections, and wax removal
- Eye redness, irritation, pain
- Skin rashes, bug bites, ringworm, and eczema
- Cough and cold symptoms
- Testing for COVID, Flu, Strep, and Fungal
- ADHD and asthma meds
- Weight check
Who Examines Your Child
- Exams will be performed by a URochester Medicine technician or school nurse, and University of Rochester providers will assess, diagnose, and treat.
- Staff will take vitals and use electronic equipment to take photos, videos, and sounds of problem areas and send data to a URochester Medicine clinician.
- URochester Medicine staff will also take strep, fungal, or viral swabs when indicated.
- A clinician can be present via video and a parent can opt for a three way video too.

Enhanced Collaboration Between Providers and Schools
Our program collaborates with Rochester City School District to train and support school nurses in completing Telemedicine visits independently, creating a more seamless process for students to access care during the school day. Telemedicine equipment is available on site at school no: 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, 15, 16, 17, 19, 22, 23, 25, 28, 34, 35, 42, 45, 46, 50, 52, 53, 54, 58, Joseph C Wilson, Loretta Johnson, School Without Walls, SOTA, Rochester Early College.
A Telemedicine Technician is also available to travel to any school in the district to perform a visit, regardless of whether the school nurse is able to complete the visit independently.
