Dr. Michmerhuizen earned her bachelor’s degree from Calvin University, studying chemical engineering and biochemistry. She then obtained her PhD in Pharmacology from the University of Michigan and completed her postdoctoral training at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Throughout her training, Dr. Michmerhuizen was supported by various fellowships, including an NSF graduate research fellowship as well as F32 and K99 awards from the NCI. She joined the faculty at URMC in August 2025. Her research interests focus on the biology and therapeutic targeting of fusion-driven leukemias and other cancers.

Zamira Soares Guerra, Ph.D.Zamira Soares Guerra, Ph.D.

Zamira Guerra Soares is a Staff Scientist in the Michmerhuizen lab with over 15 years of experience in molecular biology. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry, a Master’s in Biotechnology, and a PhD in Bioinformatics from institutions in Brazil. Her work spans protein, RNA, and DNA-based approaches across diverse disease areas. She has spent over six years at the University of Rochester contributing to molecular research in multidisciplinary environments. In her current role, Zamira supports research on fusion oncoprotein-associated condensates in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and contributes to lab management and operations.
