Overview
The PATCH (Pediatric to Adult Transitional Care in the Hospital) Lab, led by Dr. Ashley Jenkins, is dedicated to improving hospital care for individuals who transition from pediatric to adult healthcare systems. Our work focuses on those with chronic conditions of childhood, such as sickle cell disease, who often experience gaps in care during this transition.
We conduct a variety of scholarship—including quality improvement, health services research, and implementation science—to understand and address barriers to equitable inpatient care. Our mission is to develop, adapt, and implement interventions that improve access, quality, and outcomes for these populations.
At the heart of PATCH Lab is a belief in collaboration, a growth mindset, self-awareness, and open communication. Every member is encouraged to bring their authentic self, contribute ideas, and develop new skills. We are committed to fostering an inclusive, supportive environment that helps our members grow into future researchers, improvers, and change agents.
Our mission is to conduct collaborative, patient- and stakeholder-inclusive, mixed methods research to drive evidence-informed, patient-centered health care.
Our vision is to increase the capacity of people and systems to impact positive change for individuals from marginalized groups, especially young adults with chronic conditions of childhood.

Research Projects
Our research aims to improve care and outcomes for youth and adults across the lifespan in three focus areas: Sickle Cell Disease (SCD), Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD), and Pediatric to Adult Transitional Care in the Hospital (PATCH) through System Redesign. These projects explore ways to ensure youth and adults with childhood-onset chronic conditions receive quality hospital care across their life course.
