Newborn Tommy Jeffrey Kowalski was born at UR Medicine's Golisano Children's Hospital 15 weeks early at 1 pound 11 ounces. At birth, Tommy's lungs had not fully developed and were not functioning on their own. Nurses, doctors, and staff joined "Team Tommy," and in their care Tommy has grown stronger and stronger. After 115 days, Tommy is able to leave the hospital with his family.

Jacqueline Lindsey, A licensed social worker for the Baby Love Program at the University of Rochester Medical Center, is organizing a local celebration of the national Black Breastfeeding Week August 25-31. Lindsey discussed her passion for the initiative on News 8. On Saturday, August 25 from 12:30 to 3:30 there will be a special event to kick off the week.

UR Medicine's Dr. Casey Rosen-Carole, medical director of lactation services and programs, joined WXXI's Evan Dawson to discuss a range of issues related to breast and bottle feeding, and how to help new mothers find the best options for their children and themselves.

In response to this spring's U.S. opposition to a breastfeeding resolution at the World Health Assembly, the U.S. Breastfeeding Committee is asking its delegates to pledge support for nursing mothers. While culture has become more accepting of breastfeeding, there is still room for improvement.

Nursing is much tougher than it looks, and some new moms are unable to produce breast milk. This can be crushing, but using a milk bank can be a viable alternative.
