What Makes Us Unique
New Children's Hospital
In the late summer of 2015, UR Medicine opened a brand new Golisano Children's Hospital. The children's hospital encompasses nearly 245,000 square feet of space dedicated to children and their families.
Spectrum of Diagnoses
Fellows in our Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Fellowship train in a center that exclusively serves the region, allowing them to experience the full scope of Hematology/Oncology. The Division is a member of the Children’s Oncology Group (COG) and is the sole caretaker of children with cancer and blood disorders in the 11-county region surrounding Rochester, New York.
Active Transplant Program
The University of Rochester has an active Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant Program performing autologous, related, and unrelated (bone marrow and cord blood) transplants. The program is a member of the National Marrow Donor Program and the Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplant Consortium.
Palliative Care Expertise
Our fellows rotate on the Pediatric Palliative Care service under the supervision of experienced pediatric palliative care physicians. They work closely with the interdisciplinary palliative care teams, enhancing skills essential for providing comprehensive, compassionate care to patients with cancer and hematologic disorders.
The Chief of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, Craig Mullen, M.D., Ph.D., takes a personal interest and offers individual guidance to each fellow. Nina Schor, M.D., Ph.D., Chair of the Department of Pediatrics, and Patricia Chess, M.D., Vice Chair of Education, meet quarterly with fellows from our subspecialty training programs in an informal roundtable setting to offer mentorship and research guidance. In addition, a high trainee to faculty ratio allows for strong faculty interaction and guidance.

The Department of Pediatrics provides financial support for each fellow to present at one national conference per year, as this contributes to their professional development and hones their presentation and networking skills.
