Dr. Saubermann's clinical interest is centered on taking care of adolescents and adults with Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, such as Crohn's Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, Celiac Sprue(gluten sensitive enteropathy), and microscopic /lymphocytic colitis, though he also sees patients with a variety of gastrointestinal and liver related illnesses. As part of the complex care required by these patients, he utilizes a multidisciplinary approach that sometimes involves rheumatologists, pathologists, dermatologists radiologists, ophthalmologist, and surgeons. Through his clinical trial work, he also provided access to advanced treatments that are being tested in the treatment of these disorders.

Professional Background

Dr. Lawrence Saubermann is a Gastroenterologist at Strong Memorial Hospital and Professor of Medicine at the University of Rochester School of Medicine. He graduated with honors and a BA degree in Biology from Brandeis University, Waltham, Massachusetts, and then completed his MD degree at the University of Texas, Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas. His internship and residency in Internal Medicine was done at Rhode Island Hospital (Brown University) in Providence, Rhode Island. Dr. Saubermann then completed a clinical and research fellowship in Gastroenterology at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, in Boston, Massachusetts. He was an Instructor in Medicine at Brigham and Women's hospital for two years before moving to Boston Medical Center (Boston University) to establish his independent IBD research program. While at Boston Medical Center, he became an Assistant Professor of Medicine. In 2010 he became the Chief of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition at Golisano Children's Hospital, and was promoted to full Professor in both Pediatrics and Medicine. During his time as division chief he grew a robust practice and became a recognized regional and national leader in IBD. He continues to participate in research and teaching in order to provide state-of-the-art excellent patient care.

Dr. Saubermann is interested in the intestinal mucosal immune system, and how it is involved in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, such as Crohn's Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, Microscopic/lymphocytic colitis, and Celiac Sprue. He has a number of projects related to inflammatory bowel disease, including clinical research trials with new biologic agents, testing for novel serologic markers of disease activity, and examining the effects of environmental toxins on the mucosal immune system. He is collaborating with other clinical and basic science researchers throughout the university to better understand the mechanisms behind the disease and develop new therapies. In addition, he participates as a co-investigator on a longitudinal countywide database study of inflammatory bowel disease subjects.
