Dr. Saubermann's clinical interest is centered on taking care of adolescents and adults with Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, such as Crohn's Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, Celiac Sprue(gluten sensitive enteropathy), and microscopic /lymphocytic colitis, though he also sees patients with a variety of gastrointestinal and liver related illnesses. As part of the complex care required by these patients, he utilizes a multidisciplinary approach that sometimes involves rheumatologists, pathologists, dermatologists radiologists, ophthalmologist, and surgeons. Through his clinical trial work, he also provided access to advanced treatments that are being tested in the treatment of these disorders.
Dr. Lawrence Saubermann is a Gastroenterologist at Strong Memorial Hospital and Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Rochester School of Medicine. He received a B.A. in Biology from Brandeis University, Waltham, Massachusetts. He attended medical school at the University of Texas, Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas. He then completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Rhode Island Hospital, and Brown University, in Providence, Rhode Island. Dr. Saubermann then completed a clinical and research fellowship in Gastroenterology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, in Boston, Massachusetts. He was an Instructor in Medicine at the Brigham and Women’s hospital for a couple of years before moving to Boston University Medical Center to establish his independent research program. While at Boston University Medical Center, he became an Assistant Professor of Medicine, and stayed there for five years as a Staff Gastroenterologist. In July 2005, he came to Strong Memorial Hospital to continue his research and clinical activities in the area of Inflammatory Bowel Disease. He has received grants and published widely in this area, as well as written chapters in major textbooks. He enjoys teaching on the wards, in the clinics, and in the laboratory.
Dr. Saubermann is interested in the intestinal mucosal immune system, and how it is involved in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, such as Crohn's Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, Microscopic/lymphocytic colitis, and Celiac Sprue. He has a number of projects related to inflammatory bowel disease, including clinical research trials with new biologic agents, testing for novel serologic markers of disease activity, and examining the effects of environmental toxins on the mucosal immune system. He is collaborating with other clinical and basic science researchers throughout the university to better understand the mechanisms behind the disease and develop new therapies. In addition, he participates as a co-investigator on a longitudinal countywide database study of inflammatory bowel disease subjects.
