Patient Care Setting

Cancer

Biography

The diagnosis of cancer affects not only a patient, but their family and friends as well. I chose the field of oncology to help those through this very difficult situation with compassion, respect, and dignity. As health care is becoming more complex, it is important not to lose focus on patient distress, financial toxicities, and quality of life. Working with a multidisciplinary team we will provide the best quality of care and patient-centered approach for you and your loved ones. My primary clinical focus is lung cancer (including small cell, non-small cell lung cancer, and mesothelioma), & head and neck cancer. We are always addressing unmet clinical needs with clinical research trials in order to provide cutting edge medical treatments and push the field of oncology in order to better serve our patients. My research interests include thoracic oncology, quality improvement, patient distress, and education.

Professional Background

My roots are in Upstate NY - specifically New Hartford NY. I completed my Internal Medicine training with SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse NY. I stayed on as Chief Resident for an additional year. Thereafter my fellowship training in Hematology Oncology was completed with the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL.

Research

My research interests include Thoracic-Oncology, Quality Improvement, Financial Toxicity, Patient Distress, and Education.

    Clinical Trials

Randomized Phase II/III Trial of Radiation With High-Dose Cisplatin (100 mg/m2) Every Three Weeks Versus Radiation With Low-Dose Weekly Cisplatin (40 mg/m2) for Patients With Locoregionally Advanced Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Head and Neck (SCCHN)

    Lead Researcher: Arpan A Patel

This phase II/III trial compares the effect of the combination of high-dose cisplatin every three weeks and radiation therapy versus low-dose cisplatin weekly and radiation therapy for the treatment of patients with locoregionally advanced head and neck cancer. Chemotherapy drugs, such as cisplatin, work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells, by stopping them from dividing, or by stopping them from spreading. Radiation therapy uses high energy x-rays to kill tumor cells and shrink tumors. This study is being done to find out if low-dose cisplatin given weekly together with radiation therapy is the same or better than high-dose cisplatin given every 3 weeks together with radiation therapy in treating patients with head and neck cancer.
