What Is Appendicitis?

Appendicitis is an infection of the appendix. If not treated, your appendix can burst (rupture). This is a medical emergency.

The appendix is a thin pouch that is attached to the large intestine. It sits in the lower right part of your belly.

What Causes Appendicitis?

Appendicitis often happens when the inside of the appendix gets blocked.

It may be caused by:

  • Viruses
  • Bacteria
  • Parasites
  • Stool blockage
  • Tumors

What Are the Symptoms of Appendicitis?

The most common symptom of appendicitis is abdominal pain, which usually begins as a dull ache around the belly button and moves to the lower right side, becoming sharp and severe. If you experience this type of pain, contact a medical provider immediately.

Other symptoms can include:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Fever
  • Constipation or diarrhea

Treatments for Appendicitis

Your provider will use advanced diagnostic techniques to diagnose appendicitis, including:

  • Physical exams
  • Blood tests
  • Imaging tests

Treatment for appendicitis is usually an appendectomy, a common emergency surgery to remove the appendix. Your provider may also prescribe antibiotics.
