There has never been a time like now in our Department of Emergency Medicine. The combination of compassionate clinical care, residency education, and clinical and translational research is thriving at the University of Rochester. As a member of the Strong Community for the past 10 years, there has been an explosion of talent merging with state of the art science and world class patient care at our institution.

As a resident you will learn Emergency Medicine in a integrated, collaborative, medical center with an outstanding tradition of graduate medical education. We are proud to be part of a GME program that received an “A+” ranking by the ACGME with a maximum accreditation cycle. Our focus on the Next Accreditation System as defined by the ACGME, has reinvigorated our curriculum and evaluation processes to best suit your educational needs.

Our residency program thrives on a high-acuity and diverse patient populations, access to world - class specialties and cutting edge educational and patient care technologies. Despite all of these benefits, the greatest assets of our Department are the residents and faculty. Whatever your careers goals may be, whether clinical, educational, research, international or a combination of these activities, you will be well mentored by our team.

Ryan Bodkin MD MBA

Program Director, Emergency Medicine Residency

Ryan-BodkinDr. Bodkin attended Clarkson University and graduated with Highest Distinction in 2003. He received his Masters of Business and Administration from Clarkson University in 2004 and his Medical Doctorate from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 2008. Dr. Bodkin graduated from emergency medicine residency training at the University of Rochester in June 2011.  He served as Chief Resident from 2010-2011. Upon graduation, and after several years of being a part of core faculty in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Rochester, he was name Associate Residency Director in 2015 and become the Program Director in 2017.  Since then, Dr. Bodkin has also been named the Vice Chair of Education for the Department of Emergency Medicine.

He has many interests but is most passionate about teaching residents and medical students.  Dr. Bodkin serves annually as the Assistant Director for Successful Interning at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.  He is a member of numerous national programs such as ACEP, SAEM, and CORD.  Dr. Bodkin sits on several departmental, hospital and national committees such as the GME COVID Taskforce, Hospital Handoffs, 3rd and 4th year Medical School Instruction Committee, the Council of Emergency Medicine Residency Directors – Business Leadership Committee and CPC Task Force Committee.


Jason Rotoli, MD MS

Associate Program Director, Emergency Medicine Residency

Jason RotoliDr. Rotoli graduated from the University of Buffalo School of Medicine in 2009. He completed his residency training at the State University of New York at Buffalo in 2012 and was Chief resident from 2011-2012. In addition to being the Associate Emergency Medicine Residency Program Director, he also is the Director of the Deaf Health Pathways humanities elective within the UR medical school.

 


Valerie Lou, MD MPH

Assistant Program Director, Emergency Medicine Residency

Valerie Lou Dr. Lou received her medical degree from the University of California San Diego School of Medicine in 2012.  She went on to complete her residency in Emergency Medicine at the University of Rochester Medical Center.  Dr. Lou also completed a fellowship in International Emergency Medicine at the URMC.  She is an attending emergency physician at the University of Rochester Medical Center/Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY.  Dr. Lou is currently the Assistant Emergency Medicine Residency Program Director, Assistant Director of the International Emergency Medicine Fellowship, and the Wilderness Track Advisor.   Her international and research interests involve the intersection between human, animal, and environmental health.
 


Lindsey Picard, MD MS

Assistant Program Director, Emergency Medicine Residency

Lindsey Picard, MD Med Dr. Picard received her degree from the University at Buffalo in 2015.  She completed her residency in Emergency Medicine in 2018 and a Fellowship in Pediatric Emergency Medicine in 2020 – both at the University of Rochester Medical Center.  During her fellowship, Dr. Picard earned a Masters in Health Professions Education.  Aside from her Assistant Program Director role, she is also the Co-Director of the Medical Education Fellowship, and the Faculty Director of Resident Remediation.  Dr. Picard’s interests are in medical education and pediatric emergency medicine.
