How to Apply

General Information

The Department of Otolaryngology participates in the National Resident Matching Program. The NRMP is a matching service that matches applicants to programs according to preferences expressed by both parties on their individualized rank order list. Because it provides a uniform date for decisions about residency selection, the NRMP eliminates the pressure that might otherwise fall upon applicants and programs to make decisions before all options are known. The Match Participation Agreement has guidelines and procedures developed to accomplish this objective, and should be reviewed carefully.

There are three steps in a match: registration, ranking, and results. The process is conducted on the web through the NRMP’s Registration, Ranking, and Results (R3) System.

Each match has a separate registration schedule, all of which are kept on the NRMP’s Schedule of Dates. To register for any of the matches offered by the NRMP, applicants must go to and click on the register/login button. The website will walk you through the required steps.

Results are posted on Match Day at 1:00 p.m. (est) on the NRMP website, or can be obtained by contacting the NRMP office.

International Applicants

Prior clinical experience in the United States is not required for international students to apply.

It is the responsibility of the individual to secure the proper visa. The only acceptable status is an ECFMG sponsored J-1 visa. We also recognize "green cards." University of Rochester policy does not permit H-1 or H-1b visas.

If you have any questions regarding visas, please contact the Graduate Medical Education Office at (585) 275-4607. For information regarding ECFMG certification, visit the ECFMG website at

Interview Information

We offer 2 Resident applicant interview sessions per year. Upcoming interview dates are Thursday, December 1, 2016 and Saturday, December 3, 2016.

Please note that all interview offers will be sent out via ERAS at one time. Also note that more offers are sent than interviews available. Approximately 60 offers are sent out for 44 available interview openings. Interviews are scheduled based on a first response, first serve basis until all openings are filled. Anyone who responds after all interviews have been filled will be placed on a waiting list.

Interview days are divided into morning and afternoon sessions. Morning interviews start promptly at 8am and generally last until noon. Afternoon interviews start at 1pm and conclude around 5pm. Interviews will occur at our Strong Memorial Hospital office located at 601 Elmwood Ave, Rochester, NY 14642. After each interview session there will be a tour of the URMC campus with our residents that lasts about an hour.

**Since there is a waiting list, it is critical that we have as much advance notice as possible if you cannot keep your interview day/time**

Reception: A reception will be held during the evening of each interview day for applicants to meet with our faculty and residents in an informal setting.

After your interview: Please make a note to return to fill our our Interview Feedback Form.

Please contact Sheila K. McCart for more information.
