About the Program

The Radiation Oncology Residency Program is supported by the University of Rochester's Department of Radiation Oncology, a full academic department located within the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center. Under the leadership of Chairperson Yuhchyau Chen, MD, PhD, the department continues as a leading force in both cancer treatment and research. Our highly professional and nationally recognized clinical faculty members are pioneers in the use of rapidly evolving treatment modalities that will become the mainstay of future radiation therapy.

Since moving to the Wilmot Cancer Center in 2008, an increase in work space, expanded technology, greater complexity and sophistication of treatment planning, and a heightened workforce have resulted in prolific outcomes for the department, allowing us to provide our residents with the utmost quality of training.

In the summer of 2012, a three-story expansion of the cancer center was completed. As a result, the outpatient and research center was transformed into a comprehensive cancer hospital, complete with 42 inpatient beds. The integration of patient care, research, and teaching under one roof is directly in line with our nation's top rated cancer centers. By virtue of its commitment to multidisciplinary care and its shared facilities, the Wilmot Cancer Center provides an ideal environment in which to train residents in the interdisciplinary management of cancer.

We pride ourselves in our ability to provide our residents with a stimulating and rigorous program within a friendly and supportive environment. Under the leadership of Program Director Michael T. Milano, MD, PhD, our trainees are mentored with the genuine enthusiasm and steadfast guidance necessary for their success. We believe that residents who complete our program are well-rounded radiation oncologists—competent in their own field, while possessing a sophisticated understanding of all aspects of oncology.
