Emergency?
In an Emergency, call 911 or your local ambulance.Overview
The Emergency Department at Jones Memorial Hospital is provider staffed 24-hours a day. We have additional medical staff during peak hours.
You do not need a referral from your family physician to come to the ED for emergency situations.
State law protects your right to emergency physical and mental health services, no matter what kind of health insurance you have. Under State law, you don't need approval from your doctor or your health plan to get emergency room care if your symptoms start suddenly; and if, based on an average knowledge of medicine and health, you think you will suffer serious health problems if you do not get immediate medical attention.
All types of emergencies are evaluated in the Emergency Department, with referrals made to larger facilities if necessary. Air ambulance service is available when needed and weather permits.

When Should I Go to an Emergency Room?
If you think it’s a life-threatening situation, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. This could include:
- Heavy bleeding
- Seizures
- Difficulty breathing
- Extreme pain
- Unconsciousness
- Head, neck or back injury
- Pale, cold, and clammy skin
- Weak and rapid pulse
If you can’t drive safely or it is an extremely urgent situation, we suggest that you use an ambulance to get to the emergency room.
Which Emergency Room Should I Go To?
If you can contact your doctor, they will advise you. If you can’t reach your doctor and are driving yourself, go to the emergency room that is closest to you. If you’re using an ambulance and do not have a specific preference, they will bring you to an emergency room based on its location, your type of emergency, and other factors.
