Professional Bio

As Director of the Center for a Tobacco-Free Finger Lakes and Associate Director of the Smoking Research Program, Dr. McIntosh is involved with the study of nicotine dependence interventions with various populations and the training of physicians and other medical professionals in guideline-based nicotine dependence interventions. He is a founding Co-Chair of WATI (Web-Assisted Tobacco Interventions), an ongoing series of international workshops funded by the National Cancer Institute, Health Canada, and the American Legacy Foundation. He has completed an NCI-funded randomized controlled trial studying WATI with community college students . He is co-investigator on several global health projects concerning distance training platforms, maternal health improvement and diabetes prevention. He has been a project manager/co-investigator for randomized controlled trials for smoking cessation in the Dominican Republic, investigator on an obesity prevention project at worksites, and Site Principal Investigator for a study of smoking cessation education in Medical Schools.



Dr. McIntosh received his B.S. in Psychology from Iowa State University, his M.A. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Missouri-Columbia, and his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Miami. His current appointments at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry are in the Departments of Public Health Sciences (primary), Orthopaedics & Rehabilitation, the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center, and the Center for Community Health. Prior to the University of Rochester, Dr. McIntosh was a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences (Spanish Family Guidance Center / Center for Family Studies) at the University of Miami.

Patient Care Bio

Finally, Dr. McIntosh is Course Director of a Community Health Improvement Practicum and rotation director for Preventive Medicine Residents.
