Timothy E. Quill, MD is Professor Emeritus of Medicine, Psychiatry, Medical Humanities and Nursing at the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC). He is a palliative care physician, author, educator, scholar, and advocate. He was the founding director of the URMC Palliative Care Program, and a Past President of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine. Dr. Quill was the lead physician plaintiff in the New York legal case challenging the law prohibiting physician-assisted death heard in 1997 by the U.S. Supreme Court (Quill v. Vacco). He is the author of over 200 peer reviewed articles including Death with Dignity: A Case of Individualized Decision Making, published in 1991 in the New England Journal of Medicine, and of five books on palliative and end of life care including Voluntarily Stopping Eating and Drinking: A Compassionate, Widely Available Option for Hastening Death released 2021 by Oxford University Press.
