Biography

Professional Background

Dr. McMullen is a board-certified pathologist who specializes in autopsy, thoracic, and cardiac pathology. He is a graduate of the Medical Scientist Training Program at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he completed both his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees. He completed his residency training in anatomic and clinical pathology at the University of Chicago, where he also completed fellowship training in Thoracic and Surgical Pathology.

Research

Dr. McMullen has research interests in infectious disease pathology and host-pathogen interactions. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. McMullen helped develop a novel autopsy protocol used to safely perform autopsies on victims of the pandemic, and was directly involved with a number of studies investigating the pathologic features of fatal SARS-CoV2 infection. His current research pursuits include studying the roles of platelets and megakaryocytes in severe infections.
