Gina Cuyler ’92M (MD), ’95M (Res), FACP

Gina Cuyler headshotDr. Gina Cuyler is vice president of health equity and community investments for Excellus BlueCross BlueShield. In this role, she sets the organization’s direction to promote health equity, cultural sensitivity, and community health. Additionally, Cuyler owns Comprehension Internal Medicine, PLLC, and holds a voluntary faculty appointment as a clinical assistant professor of medicine at the University of Rochester. 

Cuyler completed her undergraduate training at New York University, and her medical school and internal medicine residency at SMD. Cuyler is board certified in internal medicine and received her certificate in medical management from the American College of Physician Executives.

She has a special interest in providing high quality, evidence-based, personalized medical care, and is passionate about mentorship and service. She co-founded the Black Physicians Network of Greater Rochester in 2015, a nonprofit agency that matches role models with underrepresented youth who want to pursue careers in medicine. The University honored her with its Presidential Diversity Award in 2017, recognizing her contributions at both URMC and in the community. Recently, at the recommendation of SMD’s students and in recognition of Cuyler’s commitment to them, URMC dedicated a multicultural learning space within the school in her honor. The Dr. Gina Cuyler Wellness Room represents URMC’s revitalized commitment to diversity and inclusion, and serves as a place where community, healing, and excellence can coexist.

Cuyler is co-chair of the University’s Black Alumni Network and has volunteer roles with the University’s Diversity Advisory Council, SMD Women in Medicine Committee, Rochester’s Network Leadership Council, and more. She is also a mentor within the University’s Meliora Collective, an online networking portal for University alumni and students.

Among many service awards, Cuyler has received the Gerhard Neighborhood Outreach Center Award for Outstanding Community Service and Top 20 Women in White Coats Award. She was awarded this year’s National Philanthropy Day® Outstanding Philanthropist Award by the Association of Fundraising Professionals Genesee Valley Chapter. Cuyler published Insider’s Guide to Leading Your Medical Care to educate and empower patients and family members on how to advocate for medical care.
