Periodontology Residency Open to graduates of US/Canadian and international dental schools Three-year certificate program, approved by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. Two to three residents/students accepted each year. Admission and eligibility Program Director and Chair Jack G. Caton Jr., D.D.S, M.S., is recognized as an international leader in periodontology. In 1993 he received the William Gies Award for his achievements in advancing research and therapeutics in periodontology. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Periodontology and served as director and chairman. Dr. Caton is past president and fellow of the American Academy of Periodontology. In 2004, he received the highest award granted to a member of the Academy of Periodontology, the Gold Medal. He also received the Norton Ross award for excellence in dental research in 2009. Dr. Caton has been on the faculty of periodontics at Eastman Dental since 1973, and the program director since 1990. He and his students have conducted research in periodontal wound healing, animal models, diagnosis, and human clinical trials. Caton has published over 95 scientific articles and book chapters. Clinical Activities Clinical training in periodontology and implantology is provided to develop and improve clinical skills. Case management is done with close consultation and assistance from faculty, and treatment rationale is emphasized. Each resident manages several cases under the combined supervision of the prosthodontic and periodontic programs; these cases are discussed at joint seminars. Courses Emphasis is placed upon a biologic orientation and application of these principles to the clinical management of periodontal diseases. Informal academic gatherings are arranged with outstanding teachers and investigators in periodontology and allied fields to provide a unique source of stimulation and knowledge. Periodontology Course Listing Research Residents assume responsibility for a research investigation; residents and faculty participate in research seminars that promote logical and critical scientific thought. Facilities for clinical and basic science research are available to all residents. Other Educational Opportunities Programs leading to the Master of Science or Doctor of Philosophy degree are usually integrated with the clinical training programs, although they may be taken separately. The master of science program with a major in dental science requires 30 credit hours of course work, research and a thesis reporting on the results of an original investigation. Program requirements include one or more basic-science graduate courses in subjects relevant to the research, courses in appropriate areas of dental science, and participation in dental research seminars. The Doctor of Philosophy degree program can be pursued independently or in a combined program with advanced clinical training. The latter program is designed to train clinician scientists for an academic and research career. The Ph.D. degree can be taken in the University's departments of anatomy, biochemistry, biology, microbiology and immunology, genetics, pharmacology, physiology, or biophysics.
