About Wilmot

University of Rochester’s Wilmot Cancer Institute is an NCI-Designated Cancer Center located in Rochester, New York. Wilmot provides world-class cancer treatment and care and conducts pivotal research. A primary goal of Wilmot includes education. Wilmot  serves a population of more than three million people across 27 counties in Western and Central New York.

As a component of Strong Memorial Hospital, Wilmot Cancer Institute provides specialty cancer care services at the University of Rochester Medical Center and a network of 13 locations throughout the region, including an 88-bed hospital on the campus of the University’s Medical Center. Wilmot employs over 100 APPs as part of its specialty and regional teams. Wilmot is home to one of the state’s largest blood and marrow transplant programs, as well as the region’s first cancer survivorship clinic, and one of the nation’s first geriatric oncology clinics.


Goals of the Fellowship Program

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Fellowship Program at UR Medicine's Wilmot Cancer Institute is a one-year post-graduate specialty training program for nurse practitioners and physician assistants. The program is 75 percent clinical and 25 percent didactic, including independent online education modules. 

The APP Fellowship Program at Wilmot will provide additional skills, training and mentorship experience. This is an intensive clinical program that will prepare NPs and PAs to meet the needs of culturally diverse and clinically complex patients who are typical of the cancer institute. Fellows will work with WCI faculty and APPs with a wide variety of expertise in cancer care experience. Additionally, the APP fellows will be on the cutting edge of health care delivery as they train to work within the University of Rochester Medical Center, the Wilmot Cancer Institute, and its affiliates and regional sites. By the completion of this fellowship, it is anticipated that the fellows will show clinical growth, improved clinical confidence, and increased preparedness to care for patients in all of these settings.

The APP Fellowship includes a core program of cancer care and also several specialty rotations meant to enhance oncology provider education, including radiation oncology, palliative care and hereditary cancer screening, among others. Clinical rotations within this fellowship include experiences in the ambulatory and inpatient subspecialties. The program starts with opportunities in diverse areas and then tailors to each fellow’s individual areas of interest in cancer care and their career goals.

  • Blackboard Online Learning Course
    • Patient education practice
    • Reflection on practice, patient and societal cancer impact as well as provider well-being

Educational offerings with physician fellows program:

  • Weekly Mentoring meetings
  • Grand Rounds Presentation
  • Frequent opportunity for attendance at University sponsored lectures and conferences
  • Tumor Board Participation

APP Fellowship Benefits

APP Fellows are offered a competitive Fellowship salary, full employee benefits with health, dental, life and disability insurance coverage. Also, a yearly CME allowance, 1 week of CME time/year, and paid vacation.

The Fellowship program includes certifications such as:

  • Chemo/Biotherapy Prescriber Training
  • Clinical Research Training
  • Procedures may include bone marrow biopsies and intrathecal chemotherapy
  • BLS maintenance/ACLS (as applicable)

Upon successful completion of the program, fellows will potentially be offered full-time medical staff positions in the Wilmot Cancer Institute.

Application Requirements

  • Fellowship applicants should be clinically prepared nurse practitioners or physician assistants with a strong passion for hematology/oncology and interest in a rigorous learning year focusing on this specialty.
  • Applicants must be license-eligible in New York State and have graduated (or will have graduated) from an accredited program with appropriate degree completion and national certification at time of program start.
  • A complete application includes a resume, cover letter and two letters of recommendation from a clinical educator/preceptor and faculty member.

The application deadline for the 2026-2027 cohort is March 6, 2026. Interviews will take place at the end of March, and applicants will be notified of their acceptance in April 2026. The tentative start date is October 2026, pending NYS license and organization credentialing.
