Biography

Michelle Shayne, MD, FACP is Professor of Medicine and Oncology at the University of Rochester Medical Center. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree from the Eastman School of Music and Master’s degree from Juilliard School before returning to the University of Rochester to obtain her MD degree. She remained at Strong Memorial Hospital for her internship and residency in Internal Medicine. She then completed her oncology fellowship training at Harvard’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Mass. She is in clinical practice at Comprehensive Breast Cancer at Pluta. In addition, she is co-Director of the Judy DiMarzo Cancer Survivorship Program of the Wilmot Cancer Institute. Her research interests include the study of chemotherapy-related toxicity in older cancer patients, and cancer survivorship.

She says what drew me to the University of Rochester Medical Center for her medical training, and what has kept her practicing here, is the bio-psycho-social approach to medical care. This means caring for the whole person, not simply addressing a medical condition. She manages a person’s breast cancer but she cares deeply about the emotional, psychological and social state of an individual. As a survivorship expert, her approach to a patient care includes not only incorporating state of the art treatments for the disease but also addressing a person’s concerns about exercise, diet and lifestyle to keep them healthy lifelong.
