The UR CTSI embraces the importance and benefit of fostering a diverse research workforce. We are committed to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for all. As part of the University of Rochester Medical Center, the UR CTSI wholeheartedly subscribes to the center’s ICARE values: Integrity, Inclusion, Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Excellence.

Diversity Benefits Us All

Research shows that more diverse workforces enjoy greater productivity and better outcomes – and this appears to hold true for the biomedical research workforce. According to Harvard economists, papers coauthored by ethnically diverse contributors led to greater contributions to science.

While the biomedical research workforce is becoming more diverse, several racial/ethnic groups, women, and people with disabilities remain underrepresented. For example, African Americans comprised 12.6% of the U.S. population in 2010, but only accounted for 1.1% of scientists who received research project grants from the National Institutes of Health. In comparison, Caucasians made up 72.4% of the general population and 71% of the NIH-funded scientists pool.

How we Foster Biomedical Workforce Diversity

  • Offer a mentorship program for underrepresented members of the workforce in collaboration with the Office for Faculty Development and Diversity and the Rochester CTSI Mentor Development Committee.
  • Offer unconscious bias and cultural humility workshops and training sessions
  • Provide researchers with diversity-related language for their grants
  • Promote external and internal funding programs targeting underrepresented trainees or trainees working on healthcare disparities
