Medical Student Documentation
The Compliance Office has worked closely with the Third and Fourth Year Instructional Committee to develop guidelines to allow for teaching physicians to make expanded use of medical student evaluation and management visit documentation. The changes, which took effect in April 2019, are based upon revised guidelines issued by CMS. URMC is applying them to all payers. Our CMS Student Documentation presentation explains the new guidelines and the ways in which they differ from prior guidelines on the use of student documentation. Training was offered to each department’s Compliance Liaison on May 31, 2019.
The new guidelines have been condensed into grey pocket cards which are available through the Compliance Office. Blue medical student documentation cards dated 2001 are now considered obsolete and should be taken out of circulation.
Physicians who are interested in adopting the new guidelines are encouraged to review the presentation and to contact their Liaison, the Compliance Analyst/Educator assigned to their department, or Third and Fourth Year Instructional Committee Representative to arrange for an educational session.
