What is Enlarged Prostate?
An enlarged prostate, or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), is an enlargement of the prostate gland in older men. It affects approximately 50% of men over age 50, and up to 90% of men over 80.
This excess growth of tissue compresses and obstructs the urethra, reducing the flow of urine from the bladder and sometimes blocking it entirely. An enlarged prostate is one of the leading reasons people visit a urologist.
Symptoms of an Enlarged Prostate
- Need to urinate frequently both day and night
- Weak or slow stream
- Feeling that your bladder is not emptying completely
- A stream that starts and stops
- Urgency to urinate
- Difficult or slow start to urination
- Occasional loss of control of urine flow

UR Medicine's Treatments for Enlarged Prostate
Treatment options include behavioral modifications, medications, and surgery.
Another option is Rezūm, a transurethral RF thermal therapy that can be performed in a clinic or out-patient setting. UR Medicine Urology became the first in the region to offer this treatment. It uses a hand-held device to deliver radiofrequency-generated thermal therapy in the form of water vapor to the extra prostate tissue that is causing symptoms.
Rezūm is simple in-office/outpatient therapy. It doesn’t require general anesthesia, it preserves sexual and urinary functions, and it allows patients to return to regular activities within a few days.
What Sets Us Apart?
UR Medicine Urology provides the area's most advanced and comprehensive urologic care. Many of our doctors are fellowship trained, the highest level of education available. We use the most advanced technology to perform procedures, such as minimally invasive robotic prostate surgery.
We’re a national pioneer in minimally invasive surgery, which speeds recovery, reduces post-surgery pain, and decreases the risks of complications. UR Medicine Urology is one of only a few academic medical centers offering high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), a personalized treatment for prostate cancer. We also use the latest robotic da Vinci Surgical System, with high-definition 3D imaging to enhance the surgeon's vision during procedures. This state-of-the-art technique generally means less pain and faster post-operative recovery.
Our experts participate in the most current research in urology, so we can make informed decisions based on the latest knowledge in the field. More patients turn to us for second opinions on urologic disease and conditions than any other institution in the region.
