Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBO)

What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a safe and effective treatment that helps the body heal by breathing pure oxygen inside a pressurized chamber. At UR Medicine, our specialists use hyperbaric oxygen chambers to improve blood flow, fight infection, and support recovery from complex conditions.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy can be used to treat:
- Soft tissue radiation injuries
- Chronic refractory osteomyelitis (bone infection)
- Compromised skin grafts and flaps
- Diabetic wounds in the legs or feet
UR Medicine's Approach
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) involves sitting or lying inside a sealed chamber where the air pressure is higher than normal. While inside, you breathe 100% oxygen, which allows your blood cells to carry more oxygen throughout your body. This increased oxygen helps damaged tissues heal faster and reduces swelling.
There are two main types of hyperbaric chambers:
Monoplace chamber: Designed for one person at a time.
Multiplace chamber: Holds several patients and a technician who stays inside during treatment.
What to Expect During Treatment
Each session usually lasts 1–2 hours. Most people complete multiple treatments over several weeks. While in the chamber, you can relax, listen to music, or watch TV.
Some people experience mild side effects, such as ear pressure changes (similar to flying) or temporary tiredness. Your care team will monitor you closely to ensure your safety. Treatment is different for each patient. It depends on the patient's condition and response to therapy.
