What Is Interventional Psychiatry Services?
Interventional Psychiatry Services at University of Rochester Medicine offer advanced, evidence-based treatments for adults living with severe and treatment-resistant mental health conditions. These services use innovative neuromodulation therapies, such as Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT), along with rapid-acting medications such as Esketamine (Spravato), to target areas of the brain associated with mood and other psychiatric symptoms. Patients are typically referred to our clinic when traditional therapies—such as medication and psychotherapy—have not provided adequate relief. Our program emphasizes compassionate care, individualized treatment planning, and close collaboration with referring providers, all within a safe, supportive environment.
Our Approach
To become a patient at our clinic, please fill out our online referral form listed below. You can also ask your mental health provider or primary care provider to complete the referral online or through our internal URochester Medicine referral system. Please note that for ECT, we do require you have a psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner involved in your mental health care. After we receive the referral, a nurse will call you for a phone screen and then our staff will contact you to schedule a consultation visit with one of our psychiatrists to determine if you are a good candidate for treatment. At URochester Medicine, we will provide your treatment in a comfortable, safe, and compassionate atmosphere.
Interventional Psychiatry Consultation is the first step in determining whether a neurostimulation-based treatment like TMS or ECT is appropriate for you. During this comprehensive evaluation, a board-certified psychiatrist will review your psychiatric history, current symptoms, previous treatments, and overall medical background. The consultation may include a structured clinical interview and standardized rating scales to assess the severity of your condition. Based on this information, we will make treatment recommendations and review your eligibility for TMS, ECT, or other interventional options. Our team is committed to working with you and your referring provider to ensure a coordinated and personalized treatment plan.
A treatment option for adults with depression, particularly for those who have not responded to traditional antidepressants. Esketamine is a prescription nasal spray administered under medical supervision in our outpatient clinic.
TMS therapy is a non-invasive technique that applies magnetic pulses to certain areas of the brain to stimulate brain pathways related to the treatment of depression and mood regulation.
ECT therapy can be an effective treatment for individuals with severe or recurrent depression and other treatment-resistant mood disorders, catatonia and schizophrenia with prominent affective or psychotic features. It is administered by our team of specially trained psychiatrists, registered nurses, and anesthesiologists.
