About the Program

    • Meets eligibility requirements for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) Epilepsy and the American Board of Clinical Neurophysiology (ABCN) the Epilepsy track.
    • A rigorous, innovative, and evidence-based didactic curriculum with ample 1-on-1 teaching and research opportunities
    • Active epilepsy surgery service performing resective surgery, laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT), responsive neurostimulation (RNS), deep brain stimulation (DBS), vagal nerve stimulation (VNS), pediatric and adult stereoelectroencephalography (sEEG), traditional Phase 2 monitoring techniques (subdural strip and grid electrodes), intraoperative electrocorticography, and intraoperative sensory/motor/language mapping.
    • Bi-monthly multidisciplinary patient review conferences for surgical candidates
    • An outstanding faculty with a deep commitment to education, and:
      • Scholarly interests ranging from basic science to translational and clinical research in diagnosis and management of intractable epilepsy syndromes, psychosocial team approach, neuroimaging in epilepsy, tuberous sclerosis complex, dietary therapy, outcomes research, and global health for epilepsy.
      • Leadership and clinical practice guideline development roles in the American Academy of Neurology, the American Epilepsy Society, and American Clinical Neurophysiology Society
    • A track record of publication in leading journals, including Neurology, Epilepsia and Journal of Clinical Neurophysiology

Annual volume

  • More than 300 admissions to our epilepsy monitoring unit
  • More than 400 continuous EEG neurocritical care cases
  • Over 3500 EEGs

Equipment and technologists

  • Epilepsy monitoring unit with 8 adult and 4 pediatric hard wired video EEG monitors
  • 3 continuous video-EEG systems dedicated to the Neurocritical Care Unit and additional portable monitoring devices for off-tower consultations
  • Dedicated 7 cEEG review stations for fellows and attendings co-located well-apportioned reading rooms
  • A highly experienced group of 30 dedicated EEG technologists

Candidate Requirements

Candidates should have strong interest in both clinical neurophysiology as well as comprehensive epilepsy care. Eligible candidates are expected to have clinical neurophysiology training, preferably through prior fellowship experience. Applicants interested in our Epilepsy Fellowship without prior clinical neurophysiology training will apply to our 1-year Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship Epilepsy Track (80% EEG/20% EMG). This Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship will be followed by a guaranteed second year of training in the Epilepsy Fellowship. On a case-by-case basis, select applicants with exceptional EEG exposure may be considered for a 1-year Epilepsy Fellowship without prior fellowship training.

Applicants with a strong research interest may also consider combining a year of clinical training with two years of formal research training through the Experimental Therapeutics Fellowship Program, a program continuously funded by the NIH since 1989 and specifically designed to train translational and clinical researchers in neurology.

  • 2 fellows/year – ACGME accredited Clinical Neurophysiology Program
  • 2 fellows/year – ACGME accredited Epilepsy Fellowship Program
  • 1-2 fellows/year – NIH-funded Experimental Therapeutics Fellowship Program
