Alex Besen
Alex Besen, M.D.
Hometown: Mount Pleasant, NY
Residency: University of Rochester Medical Center

What do you like about living in Rochester?

Being in a medium-sized city with a variety of easily accessible stores and resources, while also being very close to large swaths of rural parks to go walking around in. It's also nice to experience all four seasons.

Why did you select URMC for your fellowship training?

A combination of the high volume that is steadily increasing every year and the collegiality both within the hematopathology department, and between the hematopathologists and clinical oncology teams. There is a lot of collaboration and communication.

What is the best-selling point of your fellowship training?

There is both large case volume and case variety. I'm also given a lot of freedom to make my own decisions about cases right from the start.

Julia Rivera, M.D.

Residency: Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, New Orleans, LA

What do you like about living in Rochester, NY?

The small-city atmosphere, beautiful natural surroundings, and the opportunity to be close to family.

Why did you select URMC for your fellowship training?

I chose URMC because it offers a broad clinical exposure through the high volume of diverse cases, including pediatric and transplant patients, making it an excellent place to train.

What is the best-selling point of your fellowship training?

The supportive learning environment.
