Program Director

Welcome From Program Director

Welcome and thank you for your interest in the University of Rochester nephrology training program.

The University of Rochester has trained approximately 80 fellows since 1971.  We are an ACGME accredited two year clinical fellowship located in Western New York State.   We currently accept three fellows per year for a total of six clinical fellows.  We can also offer a combined pediatric-adult nephrology fellowship.  Fellows rotate on three inpatient services (consultation, transplant, and dialysis), all in Strong Memorial Hospital, an 830 bed tertiary care referral center for Upstate New York.

Our fellows are exposed to the full spectrum of nephrology practice including acute and chronic kidney disease, end stage renal disease and its associated complications, renal transplantation, kidney disease in other solid organ recipients,  glomerular disease,  critical care nephrology, nephrolithiasis, cardio-renal syndrome and more.   We offer a wide array of dialysis modalities, including continuous renal replacement therapy in our ICU’s, hemodialysis and home dialysis including both peritoneal and home hemodialysis.  Our fellows perform many kidney biopsies- both native and transplant.  We strive to offer our fellows the right balance of autonomy and support.

We have a diverse and dynamic faculty who are dedicated to education both on the medical wards and through didactic presentations.  We have a formal educational curriculum which is constantly updated to enhance learning.

Our two year program is structured to provide time for electives and scholarly pursuits in both years.  Example electives include home dialysis training, apheresis, tissue typing, renal pathology and palliative care.

In addition to training excellent clinical nephrologists, we strive to instill in our fellows the humanitarian and professional skills that are essential in caring for our complex group of patients.

The quality of life in Rochester is a well-kept secret.  It is one of the most affordable and safest places to live. The average commute is 20 minutes (less for most fellows) and the schools in the local suburbs are among the best in the nation. There are many cultural amenities and its location near the Finger Lakes affords wonderful outdoor opportunities as well including hiking, biking, and snow and water sports.

Once again, thank you for your interest.  We look forward to communicating with you.

Warmly,

Scott Liebman, MD, MPH

Our Facilities

The University of Rochester is a large tertiary referral center that provides complex care in a number of areas which interface with Nephrology, providing services to patients in the greater Rochester area as well as Western New York and Northern Pennsylvania. Throughout training, our fellows gain exposure to a considerable volume of renal pathology, including General Nephrology as well as complications of Solid Organ Transplantation, Bone Marrow Transplantation, and Advanced Heart Failure Therapies.

Our fellows care for patients at Strong Memorial Hospital, and have elective experiences at several area dialysis units.

Strong Memorial Hospital

Strong Memorial Hospital Main EntranceOne of the nation's top academic medical centers, the University of Rochester Medical Center forms the centerpiece of the University's health research, teaching, patient care, and community outreach missions. With more than $145 million in federal research funding, UR School of Medicine research funding ranks in the top one-quarter of U.S. medical centers, while the School of Nursing ranks 12th highest in funding. The University's health care delivery network is anchored by Strong Memorial Hospital—a 739-bed, University-owned teaching hospital—which boasts programs that consistently rank among "America's Best Hospitals," according to U.S. News & World Report.

We are fortunate to house several nationally recognized advanced treatment centers within our institution, and we provide Nephrology Consultative Services to patients within these programs.

Area Dialysis Units

The URMC Nephrology Group serve as medical directors and Nephrologists to patients in several area dialysis units. Fellows have the opportunity to follow patients in these facilities, and work closely with providers and staff to provide care to our local Hemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis patients.
