About the Program

Strong sign of supportURMC has been a leader in medical education since 1925, when the School of Medicine and Dentistry first opened its doors, followed one year later by Strong Memorial Hospital, then a 250-bed community hospital. Now 847 beds (and ever-growing!), Strong is the flagship hospital for the URMC system, which involves multiple affiliated hospitals serving a large portion of Upstate New York and northern Pennsylvania.

The Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care enjoys a prominent position within the medical center, as witnessed by our ever-expanding ICU footprint, the high esteem awarded to our faculty and fellows (regular winners of both the Faculty Teaching Award and the Fellow Teaching Award from the Department of Medicine), and the fact that our URMC Chief Medical Officer and Chair of the Department of Medicine trained as pulmonologists first and foremost. It’s nice to have friends in high places!

Faculty Perspective

"I moved to Rochester in 2008 because I felt that URMC could provide me the opportunities to grow as a clinician, educator and scholar. I was particularly drawn by the collegial and collaborative environment in the Pulmonary & Critical Care division."

Fellow Perspective

“The training and support I've received over the course of my fellowship has allowed me to blend my clinical interests with active research, a path that was sometimes hard to visualize.  Seeing this mix more clearly – and putting it into practice -- helped me reach an informed decision when deciding on a career path.  I'm not sure I would have reached the same conclusions without the experience and guidance I've gotten over the course of my fellowship.”

Alumni Perspective

"I was attracted to the camaraderie amongst the trainees and the warmth of the faculty. I knew I wanted to train at a program that was busy and challenged me with complex pathology—you will get that here and so much more!"
