Training
- 4-year categorical program (PGY1-PGY4) with a built-in PGY1 year that is designed towards a career in PM&R
- Highly trained and specialized faculty (eg. Brain Injury, Spinal Cord Injury, Stroke & Other Neurologic Disorders, Interventional Spine, Musculoskeletal Medicine & Ultrasound-guided procedures, Sports Medicine, Adult & Pediatric Spasticity management, Electrodiagnostics, and Prosthetics/Orthotics/Amputation management)
- Extensive training in diagnostic and interventional procedures, including interventional spine procedures, ultrasound guided injections, injections for spasticity management, baclofen pump management, and nerve conduction and needle electromyography (EMG)
Educational Benefits

Research and Didactics
- Fostering and support of research, including opportunities to participate in a one-month research elective and the resident research track
- Mentorship for residents including an individual faculty advisor and research mentor
- Protected didactic time for 4 hours every Thursday morning
- 18-month rotating curriculum. Yearly review of anatomy and physical exams. Workshops including ultrasound/injection and electrodiagnostics (EMG).

Outpatient Rehabilitation Center at Clinton Crossings
The University of Rochester Medical Center's Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Program is sponsored by Strong Memorial Hospital (SMH)—an 886-bed, Level I trauma center that serves as URMC's main teaching hospital. The hospital is a tertiary and quaternary care referral center for upstate New York, as well as a bone marrow, cardiac, liver, and renal transplant center. It is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCH) and has been named one of America's best hospitals by U.S. News & World Report.
At SMH, we have a 20-bed general rehabilitation unit and an 11-bed brain injury rehabilitation unit. We have updated therapeutic facilities and equipment for both adult and pediatric patients. Our facility is the only CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities)-accredited Spinal Cord System of Care in the upstate New York region.
PM&R residents spend the majority of their time at SMH and its outpatient locations—including Saunders Center for Orthopaedics and Physical Performance, which is the biggest, most comprehensive orthopaedic facility in the Northeastern U.S.”

There are ample opportunities for residents to participate in volunteer activities, including the annual departmental sponsored SCI Health Fair.
