How to Apply
Candidates for residency are selected through the National Resident Matching Program. The Department of Surgery maintains two separate match numbers, one for categorical residents and one for designated preliminary positions.
We do not require a minimum USMLE score, although all scores must be passing. There is no requirement regarding length of time since medical school graduation.
We accept only electronically submitted application packages through the ERAS, available at your medical school dean's office. Three letters of reference are required in addition to the Dean's letter. These letters should come from full-time faculty members in surgery. One must come from the Chairman of the Department or the General Surgery Program Director.
We use e-mail to communicate with applicants, including invitations for interviews. Therefore, it is critical that applicants check their e-mail frequently during the application period.
The deadline for applications is November 1, 2019. Only completed application packages are reviewed. Interviewing is by invitation only. Applicants' interview dates are held between December and January
Candidates selected for interviews will have an opportunity to attend Surgery Grand Rounds, and will be able to interact with full-time faculty and residents.
Applicants invited to interview for the General Surgery Residency Program also are invited to attend an informal gathering at a local restaurant with residents currently in the program. These social events occur the evening prior to each interview date. Participation is optional.
Applicants will be invited for interview mid October 2018. Generally, applicants can choose their interview date among the three offered.

The residency program selects the best qualified candidates regardless of their age, sex, race, creed, sexual orientation, national origin or handicap. The selection process focuses on information supplied in the application package: application form, personal statement, Dean's letter, scholastic accomplishments, letters of recommendation, USMLE scores and a personal interview.

The University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) does not contract with any single hotel to offer discounted rates. We have found that applicants have specific hotel preferences and can often find better rates through online services. When booking your hotel, we recommend that you ask if shuttle service can be provided to and from URMC.
Most hotels in the area provide shuttle service to the University of Rochester Medical Center. If you are driving, visitor parking is available in the Medical Center Parking Garage. Bring your parking ticket with you for validation.
The University of Rochester Medical Center is a short, 15-minute drive from the Greater Rochester International Airport, which offers service from most major carriers.
