The MS-EPI program requires 31 credit hours of courses, including 19-20 credits in required courses in epidemiology theory and application, biostatistics, statistical programming and data management, and research ethics. Students then take 6-9 credits in elective courses offered in a wide variety of health and analytic methods courses at the university, as well as epidemiology elective courses such as causal epidemiology methods, and topical courses including environmental, nutritional, cardiovascular, infectious disease, injury and emergency medicine, cancer, and chronic disease epidemiology.
Students have two options for their capstone culminating experience as part of their MS Epidemiology degree:
- Thesis Option: This involves 6 credits of thesis research, on a topic developed by the student and faculty advisor, in which the student develops and designs a proposed research project with appropriate statistical analyses and study designs, conducts the analyses, prepares a written dissertation, and publicly defends the work.
- Integrated Learning Experience (ILE) Option: This 3-credit ILE is a high-quality applied research product developed with a written document summarizing the experience over the course of 1 semester. There is an additional 3-credit elective course for this capstone option as well.
