Training Grant Appointment Process

We are extremely fortunate to have support for the Toxicology Training Program from NIH/NIEHS via an institutional training grant (T32 ES007026). The T32 supports both pre- and postdoctoral trainees. All candidates must hold US citizenship or be legal resident aliens (have a ‘green card’) prior to being appointed.

We do not have enough T32 “slots” to support all predoctoral trainees for all years, so we have to prioritize how slots are utilized. The goal is to provide one year of support to each eligible student. Additional years of support may be possible depending on the outcome of recruitment efforts from the prior year. Most commonly, but not always, rising second-year students will be appointed, assuming satisfactory progress in the first year. Additional years of support are granted after review of nominations by the Steering Committee (new process as of 2025). The nominations must come from the mentoring faculty, not the students. The appointment process is the responsibility of the Program Co-Directors and is not up to the student. This means that, regarding T32 support, students should not promise anything to prospective or current mentors, but, rather, should refer questions to the Co-Directors.

The appointment process for postdoctoral trainees proceeds via a nomination process. Appointments can be made either for trainees who are already at the University or for those who are recruited to the University. Faculty who would like to nominate a postdoctoral trainee for support should contact Dr. Margot Mayer-Pröschel for more information. We cannot ‘hold slots’ for candidates, but make every effort to inform the training community several months in advance of a slot opening on the T32 to help with long-range planning.
