UR SPI organizes a variety of events throughout the academic year, ranging from talks by invited speakers to career development workshops to social events. Please join our monthly meeting on the 3rd Thursday of the month from 3-4pm if you would like to contribute to shaping our events. If you would like to volunteer and assist with organizing an event, please contact URSPI.

Memo Competition Judging Rubric 2021

Prizes:

1st Place team: $200

2nd Place team: $100

3rd Place team: $50

Members of the university community are invited to enter for a chance to practice their skills in communicating and advocating for science policy. The competition will be divided into two parts, (1) a one-page policy memo addressed to a specific audience and (2) a public presentation of the policy proposals. Teams of one or more that most effectively advocate for their memos will win up to $200. All authors must be affiliated with the University of Rochester.

  • Policy Chat with Jesse Llop
    Senior Data Analyst in the Office of Innovation at the City of Rochester with a keen interest in joining science and policy together

  • Advocacy vs Lobbying Workshop
    The Office of Governmental Affairs will present about the differences between advocacy and lobbying and how to properly interact with elected officials either on behalf of University of Rochester or as an individual.
  • Interview Weekend Poster Session
    Join the University of Rochester Science Policy Initiative at the interview weekend poster session to get a better understanding of what science policy is, what a future career in science policy looks like, and how the group can help with those goals!
  • Improv Workshop
    Communication is an important aspect for any career. As scientists we have many chances to learn how to communicate scientifically, but not as many to communicate our science to the general public. The Improv Workshop aims to help teach how to communicate to a diverse audience and to have the confidence to talk about your research or science in any setting.
