About Us

History

The student executive board leaders of SNMA and LMSA founded the Belton’s Health Center, named after Dr. Ruby Belton. The clinic was established because of the apparent health disparity that is impacting the Black and Latinx Community of Rochester, NY. Our goal is to answer the call for justice and health equity by providing acute care services, work/school physicals, and “specialty day” services such as psychiatric and neurological services. Through the University of Rochester’s help and our dedication to helping Rochester’s underserved populations, the clinic will be opened the first and third Saturday of every month to those who have low income and/or no insurance. The location was strategically chosen to provide care for a community that has survived years of systematic oppression due to racial segregation. We must correct these injustices that would typically prevent these underserved populations from receiving adequate health care. The clinic is operated predominantly by medical students, physicians, and other health professionals of color whose healthcare knowledge will not be limited by cultural or language barriers. We hope that the clinic will be one of many beacons to enact much-needed change in our National Health System, which tends to exclude disadvantaged populations from adequate healthcare financially.

We look forward to serving you.

-SNMA and LMSA

Mission

Our mission is to provide medical care to the uninsured and underinsured Black and Latinx population of Rochester that may otherwise have gone underserviced or ignored. In turn, we as healthcare workers will build a trusting relationship within the community and ultimately redefine healthcare for the city of Rochester. We can achieve this by partnering with reliable Black and Latinx physicians who are knowledgeable of the gaps in healthcare for people of color and who are motivated to work towards health equity.
