Advanced Vision Correction Procedures We Offer
While LASIK is a great option for many, it isn’t right for everyone. You may still be a candidate for other procedures that offer excellent vision correction.
At UR Medicine’s Flaum Eye Institute, our fellowship-trained refractive surgeons work with you to determine the best approach based on your eyes, your goals, and the latest proven technologies.

PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy)
Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) is a form of laser vision correction. It differs from LASIK in that no corneal flap is created. PRK may be recommended if you:
- Have thinner corneas
- Have certain corneal conditions
- Are at higher risk for eye injury post-operatively
Recovery takes longer than LASIK, but outcomes are often just as successful.
Implantable Collamer Lens
If laser surgery isn’t an option, implantable collamer lenses (ICL) may be an option. An ICL is a clear, prescription lens that is placed inside the eye, behind the iris and in front of your natural lens. It works much like a contact lens—but you don’t feel it, and you don’t need to remove or replace it. No corneal tissue is removed during ICL placement, and the lens can be removed or exchanged if needed.
ICL may be recommended if you:
- Have moderate to severe nearsightedness
- Have a very strong prescription
- Have thin or irregular corneas
- Have dry eye syndrome
- Want a reversible vision correction option
At UR Medicine’s Flaum Eye Institute, surgeons use proven implantable lens options, such as Verisyse. We will carefully evaluate eye anatomy, prescription strength, and long-term eye health before recommending this approach.
ICL surgery is typically an outpatient procedure, and recovery is often quick.
Lens-Based Vision Correction Procedures
In some cases, the best vision correction option involves replacing the eye’s natural lens rather than reshaping the cornea. These procedures are similar to cataract surgery, even if a cataract is not yet present.
Lens-based procedures may be suggested if you:
- Are older and have age-related vision changes
- Have early cataracts
- Are not a candidate for corneal laser procedures
- Want to address both distance and near vision in one procedure
Lens implant type is selected according to each patient’s visual preferences.
Choosing the Right Procedure Matters
Whether the recommendation is LASIK, PRK, ICL, or a lens-based procedure, the goal is always safe, long-term vision correction.
At Flaum Eye Institute, procedure recommendations are based on:
- Eye health and anatomy
- Prescription strength and stability
- Safety and long-term outcomes
- Your daily activities and vision goals
Your surgeon will review your individual needs thoroughly to determine which procedure is the best fit for your vision.
