Low Vision Services

Low vision is having impaired vision that cannot be corrected by glasses, surgery or medication. Woman using magnifierLike many conditions, low vision is best described as range of disabilities that may have a moderate to profound effect on everyday tasks and pleasures such as driving, recognizing faces, reading, or seeing screens clearly. We generally consider a patient to have low vision when they have 20/200 or worse visual acuity in their best seeing eye. Low vision is usually irreversible and often linked to diseases such as:

  • Age related macular degeneration
  • Severe diabetic retinopathy
  • Glaucoma
  • Hereditary maculopathies (such as retinitis pigmentosa)
  • Ocular trauma

Through a partnership with Goodwill Vision Services, we provide hope and encouragement to patients with low vision. We do this through:

  • Specialized low vision screenings
  • Co-management with specialty ophthalmologists
  • Referral for vision therapy
  • Access to adaptive technology

Our goal is to help maintain current vision and to provide resources so that patients can lead fulfilling and independent lives.

Our low vision specialists are a team of optometrists specifically trained in this discipline. Upon referral, they provide patients with comprehensive vision exams resulting in a complete profile of a patient’s visual abilities. Together with Goodwill vision therapists, patients receive training, adaptive technology, and counseling to maximize their ability to enjoy life to its fullest. Our low vision team includes:

Scheduling Low Vision Exams

Low vision exams are available only by the referral of an eye doctor and with express permission from Goodwill Vision Services. Low vision exams should not be confused with medical therapy to treat ongoing eye disease. Patients should continue seeing their referring eye care team for these services to preserve their vision.

For more information about receiving a referral for a low vision exam, please contact Goodwill Vision Services at 1-888-859-1606. Flaum Eye Institute cannot independently schedule your low vision appointment.
