Increasing Access to Medications for Opioid Use Disorder from the Emergency Department
Implementation of screening for opioid use disorder allowing an opportunity to intervene in a patient centered way is needed to improve identification of OUD and linkage to treatment from the emergency department to improve patient morbidity and mortality. Initiation of buprenorphine in the emergency department requires a patient centered approach in the era of fentanyl where the timing and tolerance of initiation is variable. Updates around current evidence-based harm reduction strategies are reviewed.
